This is the first letterbox we’ve hidden. Hope you enjoy finding it.

It is hidden in a Winnebago County Forest Preserve named after the Pottawatomie princess who married the founder of Rockton, IL. If that clue doesn’t give it away, the Preserve also shares its name with the local high school in Rockton.

The area has been heavy with mosquitoes, so we suggest you use bug repellent.

To find the letterbox, locate the little playground within this Preserve, walk or drive just west of the playground, and take the driveway that heads north towards a shelterhouse. The shelterhouse is called Bird Cove. West of the shelterhouse you will see a trail head. Begin hiking on the trail. You will soon cross a little footbridge over a creek. Once across the bridge you will notice a tree growing up from right in the middle of the trail. From this tree, take approximately 29 steps further along the trail. Then stop, look to your right, and you will see a fallen tree. It is smooth and may have mushrooms growing off of it. The letterbox is under this fallen tree, about 5 feet in from the left side.

Please replace the letterbox well, and enjoy the rest of future searches : )
