Night at Fisher Museum

Harvard Forest School
Petersham, MA

Length of walk: One hour—2.5 miles

To get to the school: From Route 2 take Exit 17 toward Petersham for three miles. The school will be on your left. From Worcester or Belchertown: Take Route 122 toward Petersham, turn on to Route 32 and go through the center of Petersham. The school will be three miles down on the right You can park in the lot in front of the two brick buildings. (Shaler Hall and Fisher Museum) The Museum is free—check for hours.

Start walking so the buildings are on your right. Take a right after the Fisher Museum, walking between the white house and the museum. Continue straight on to the dirt road. You will notice numbered signs with information on them. You will also come across many on going experiments in the forest. Please do not disturb any of the equipment. Your first box is located near sign #6, Old Pasture Gate. About five feet to the right there is a large flat rock. Look around the rock to find “Eggsactly” what you are seeking.

Continue up the dirt road past an open cut area on the right. A couple hundred yards later you will see a yellow arrow pointing to a path on the left. There will be brown and yellow number signs along this path. Shortly after starting on this path you will come to a small mountain laurel patch. On the right after the patch are old moss covered stumps. Check here for box #2.

Follow the path until you come to another yellow arrow pointing to the left, with a blue tower in the background. You will be turning down this path to the left eventually, but first walk twelve paces down the path toward the tower. Look toward the bright blue tower, you’ll find the third that you seek, under a clam shaped rock, why don’t you take a peek.

Go back those twelve paces in the direction of the yellow arrow. The tower should be on your right soon you should see a #8. After entering the hardwoods a wooden walkway will be on your left. Follow the wooden walkway. At the end “Hop” off and find #4.

Walk along the path and take a left when you encounter an old cart road. At the green gate take a left on to the dirt road. This will take you back to the pasture you saw in the beginning of your walk. Along this road watch for a large downed pine tree on your right. This giant “rib cage” appears to be pointing at an oak tree next to the road. #5 is between a rock and a hard place.

After you go by the pasture, take another left and this will take you directly to the parking lot.
