You can get here from Pahoa taking highway 130 and following it south until you run out of road (it merges with 137) or if you are checking out the other letterboxes in the area (there are at least 3 nearby) you can follow the coastal highway 137 southwest to the end.

At the end of the road (literally) there is a parking lot where you can hike down to the beach. It is across from the Kalapana Village Cafe which has great food and great ice cream made in Hawaii. (We like Haupia which is a coconut ice cream.)

Follow the signs to the beach trail. Follow the trail to the beach. When the lava is flowing into the ocean, the plume of steam and ash is very visible from the path off to your left. The trail starts out over black lava and patches of red sand. When the trail turns to all black sand the rest of the way to the beach, there will be a small grove of 2-3 trees on the left. Hike out to the grove. As you approach, on the left side there is a small palm tree (at least small in June 2009). Behind the palm tree is a small lava tube opening. The letterbox is hidden behind behind a large flat rock placed over part of the crack in the lava.

Rehide well.

Caution regarding swimming at the beach: the undertow can be very strong at times. Check at the restaurant or with the local artisans that are at the trailhead/parking area before hopping in to cool off.
