Quabbin Reservoir, Gate 16, Shutesbury Ma.

* Note: There is no actual gate.*

The Quabbin Reservoir was created in 1939 in the evacuated Swift River Valley, in order to provide a supply of water for the city of Boston. The construction of the Quabbin required the building of two dams and the destruction of the towns of Prescott, Dana, Enfield, and Greenwich. By 1946, the reservoir was filled, creating one of the largest bodies of untreated drinking water in the world. The reservation also serves as a wildlife sanctuary and offers numerous hiking trails on the nearly 40,000 acres that are open to the public. It is one of my favorite places to go hiking and fishing.

From the yellow blinking light on Rt.202 in Pelham, Ma. Go north on Rt. 202 for 4.3 miles to a parking area on your right, across from Prescott Rd (Just after the Lake Wyola sign).
From Rt.2: take exit 16 onto Rt.202 south, towards Amherst. Go 10.2 miles to the parking area on your left. Directly across from the Lake Wyola sign.

Clue: Take the trail on the right side of the parking area to the main trail. The trail will soon merge onto a dirt road, stay right. At the next fork, keep left going downhill. In a very short while the road curves slightly to the right. Just after this curve, there is a very large pine tree on your right. Just before you get to the tree, look right and back into the woods to see a pile of rocks that looks like the end of a stone wall. (It appears to be a corner of an old foundation). Go to those rocks and while facing them, look to your left to see a few rocks at the base of a tree. Your catch is hiding under those rocks. Move the roundish rock to get to the letterbox. Please rehide carefully and put the rock back in front of the box.

Before you go back to your car, continue on the road downhill to go down to the water and sit for a while and enjoy the peace and beauty that makes Quabbin great.

***Please bring you own ink and pen***

Dogs are not allowed at the Quabbin
