Clues

Bent of the River Audubon is in Southbury, CT. Take Rt. 84 to exit 14 and then Rt. 172 north. Left on Flat Hill Rd. and left into Audubon’s Bent of the River. There are no dogs, bicycles or fishing allowed and a donation is requested.

This is a about a three mile moderate hike steep in parts. The Butterfly has flown to Scalo’s overlook where in early spring and late fall she has a nice view.

After parking head over to the covered info center. Trail maps are available here along with lots of other information about Bent of the River. Stroll along the Pomperaug River and head toward the barn where rest rooms are available. Take the Pootatuck Road and then right on the Tulip Tree Trail. Visit the Eagle Overlook if you are brave. Next is a right on Manquash’s Gap and then a right on Scalo's Trail. Scalo’s overlook will be on your left. Watch for the sign. Take in the view and then look left about 10 or 15 feet to an embedded rock with a pile of rocks at its far side under which she rests. Continue your hike returning the way you came or along Sachem’s Ridge Trail for a longer way back to your car. Don’t forget about our other box here at Bent of the River Southbury’s Dragonfly.

There is no ink pad so bring your own and please return our box to its hiding place carefully. Let us know of your hike and if repairs are needed. We the Rusty Hinges are all 55++++ so we know that if we can make the hike so can you. Again please remember no doug allowed.
