The letterbox FOSSIL PARK is found at the Fossil and Prairie Center and Park Preserve near Rockford IA. Log on to www.fossilcenter.com for directions.

When you reach fossil park take the driveway on the right and park in the lot on top of the quarry. Walk along the trail that follows the quarry rim. Soon you will find signs that explain about the park and a littler farther on one that has an arrow and says kilns. Follow the kiln trail. When you find the kilns look to your right. There is a small, tall hill with an old telephone pole on top. The letterbox is hidden under some grass at the base of the pole.

While you’re here be sure to check out the visitor center and look for some fossils. You can find brachiopods, crinoids, bryozoans, corals cephalopods, gastropods and perecypods. This area is so rich in fossils that finding one is easy. The hard part is finding a “good” one. My favorites are the pieces of crinoids stems, they look like little tires.

Four Steps to Finding Fossils

1. Turn Of the Trail
2. Walk Ten Paces
3. Crouch Down
4. Look Under Your Foot
Viola!
