Ithaca is a unique, small city in central New York (Tompkins County). It is located on Cayuga Lake, one of the Finger Lakes formed thousands of years ago by huge glaciers which left behind spectacular gorges. Ithaca is home to 29,000 residents and nearly as many college students.

This is the location of one of two letterboxes placed in the Ithaca area by three friends (TRIO) in late September, 2001. We hope you enjoy the searches at Sapsucker Woods and at The Plantations. The clues to this box location are moderately easy.

SAPSUCKER WOODS…
home of the Laboratory of Ornithology and a favorite spot for birders and nature walkers

Here you will find 4.2 miles of winding trails, and while you may not see a Yellow-bellied sapsucker, you are sure to enjoy the peaceful woods. Dogs are not allowed.

GETTING TO SAPSUCKER WOODS:

Coming from the West by one of three route numbers (79, 89 or 96), go down a hill into Ithaca, and turn left onto Route 13 North. If you are coming from the East by Route 79, go down the hill, and in Ithaca, turn right onto Route 13 North.
Travel North past the Cayuga Heights Exit and the Pyramid Mall Exit, and proceed to the first stoplight where you will turn right onto Warren Road. After about one mile you will come to a four-way stop. Turn left onto Hanshaw Road, and travel eight tenths of a mile to Sapsucker Woods Road where you turn left. (The construction in the area is due to the expansion of the Laboratory of Ornithology building.)
Drive half a mile on this road to a small parking area on the right.
Leave your car here, and cross the road to the West side.

SPECIFIC CLUES:

Enter through the gate. Consult the map display to take the right trail to the shelter where there is a bench. Follow the winding, mulched path. You are close to the letterbox when you see the shelter area, so this is the time to be “discreet” in case there are people in the vicinity. You do not want to call attention to the box, so it is best to delay the end of the search until other people leave the area. There is a map display ahead on your left, but just before you reach this map, you will need to make a “split decision.”

Please read the disclaimer and waiver of responsibility before attempting to find any letterbox.
