Ostby Memorial Forest Hampton CT. Rating Easy 1 1/2 mile Loop of easy walking.6 BoxesPlanted By The NeeDeeps Directions:Off RT.6 in Hampton turn on to East Old Route 6 Road.Travel down 0.5 of a mile and park in the pull off area on the right, near the wooden sign stateing Ostby Memorial Forest. This land was donated by Rad and Leila Ostby in 1999 as part of Wolf Den Land Trust.Enter the trail and follow the red blazes, you will see trees with blue on them those trees are marked for harvest and will be cut down.Continue on the red and you will have a stone wall running parallel with you on the right, keep going to you come to a foundation, there will also be a well on your left but it's covered (But still don't let the kid's get near it).You will see a sign on the tree with some history about the farm that used to be there. From the front of the Foundation and near the tree with the sign on it take a reading of 125 degrees to a fallen down old rotted tree,in a hole inside the tree near the trunk, covered with sticks is the Ostby Memorial Forest Letterbox.(Please Rehide All The Boxes As You Found Them.) Back in the olden days farmers feared that they would be robbed of all their hard earned money,so they used to hide all of there worthy posessions out in the woods so not to be found. Now Continue on the trail passing by some big rocks and shortly after a stone wall that you have to go through.Pass through the wall AND WATCH FOR A VERY SKINNY TREE ON THE RIGHT WITH A RED BLAZE ON IT.You can see this tree from the wall. When you get to this tree STOP (time to bush wack) turn to the left and walk 28 steps down into the woods, then STOP turn left again and walk another 28 steps. This should bring you back to the wall, once near the wall there sould be a tree that splits in two sisters to your left. Now turn to your right and walk down the wall 41 steps STOP,there in the wall behind a stone door is the letterbox. All you have to do to get your prize is remember your steps, left at 28 not once but twice then right at 41.Back to the trail and keep going. The farmers did not want to take a chance of being seen in the day light with all that loot,so they hid their money at night under the light of the silvery moon.Soon you will come to a murky area that you can cross on stones and then a stream with a stone bridge,a little further you come to a Y.You can go right to the Beaver Pond overlook or you can over look it and go left with the red blazes, soon you will see a stone wall on your right and then on your left,From the end of the wall on your left near the trail take a reading of 345 degrees you should be looking at the stone wall to your right, there will be a dead looking tree that splits into two sisters in front of the wall, behind that tree in the wall behind a pillar of a rock is letterbox #3.(From here put your dogs on a leash and hold your kids hands) the trail will come out onto Sarah Pearl RD.At the road turn left and walk 100 feet, watch on your left for the entrance back into the woods.Continue on with the red blazes until you come to a stone bridge, just before the bridge on the right will be a ugly stump,on the back side of this stump in a hole covered with a flat rock is box #4.After stamping keep going and you will see a well on your right (it's covered but watch the kids) this was an old wishing well,so close your eyes and make a wish.Right after the well there will be another foundation,it was to said that this old farmer was the richest of them all,for he had cattle and a tall tale of a buried treasure. Now keep going until you come to a stream that you cross over on rocks and wooden planks, soon you come to stone wall, step through the stone wall and go down the right side about 15 steps and low in the wall behind a stone door is box #5.The farmers used these walls to keep their cattle penned up.OK now keep going and you will cross another stream on wooden planks, and soon some more stone walls. When you get to the stone walls Stop, from the end of the wall on your left take a reading of 140 degrees to a big oak tree (this will be on the back side of the wall).Behind that tree is a flat rock sticking up out of the ground (This could be the head stone of that old farmer, and they say he might have buried his treasure with him.) Just in front of it is another flat rock under it is box #6.To get back to your car just follow the trail a little more to the road, once at the road turn left and walk 100 feet to your car.And if you do find any treasure along the way, help yourself to a little but leave some for others. The NeeDeeps.
