Fort Sully was built in 1863 on the east side of the Missouri River. Its job, or the job of those stationed there, was to protect settlers. Fort Sully only existed on this site for 3 years before being relocated.
There are no remains of this fort but there is a marker at the site.
The site of Fort Sully is in what is now the Farm Island Recreation Area. 4 miles east of Pierre on Rt 34.

To find the letterbox. Enter the park (there is a $6 day fee or get a yearly pass if you plan to be in the area again) and head east towards the Visitor Center.

Park in the lot at the Visitor Center (sign says Family Center, I think). Find the fort marker behind the building. Now to the west, on the far side of the parking lot, see an electrical box marked Caution High Voltage. On the right side (northern side) of this box is a small magnetic box with camo tape on it. It may be covered by some foliage.
The log book is very small. Please let me know when it is almost full so I can make arrangements for it to be replaced. RIFamily@cox.net
Enjoy this park, it has some great swimming and biking. Have fun!
