This clue is part of the Urbana Park District’s Wild About Parks Quest--celebrating the Anita Purves Nature Center’s 30th anniversary. The Quest runs 6/13/09-6/12/10, but the boxes will remain in place indefinitely. Prizes can be won during the Quest for those who find 10, 20, and 30 boxes. Those who locate all 30 will be entered into a grand prize drawing. For more information, and for clue booklets, visit www.urbanaparks.org.

Leal Park
Difficulty: Easy
Time: 10 min

Enter the park from the parking lot just off of East University before Race Street. Follow the paved path into the Gazebo and take a seat on one of the benches. Observe the park and imagine the year 1833. What do you think the area looked like then? How was the land used? The large oak tree just north of the Cottage could probably tell a few stories about early Urbana and this park in particular. Find the plaque at the base of the mighty oak’s trunk to find out just how old the tree is. After exploring the oak carefully observe all the trees in the park and find the one that is not like the rest. There is only one true “blue” winner, though all the trees are unique. Search below its blue leaves (or needles) on the south side of the tree to discover this parks letterbox. Have fun learning the history of this small area; it contains a lot more than you think! Please be discreet when removing and replacing this box.
