I once had a series called Spongebob and friends here in 2004/2005. I removed them when I moved to North Carolina. When I removed them I could not find the “Gary” Letterbox. I don’t know if it got muggled or carried away by an animal. There is always the possibility that it was not placed back in the right spot. This box is in memory of Spongebob’s pet, Gary the snail.

This box is located on Rattlesnake Gutter Road in Leverett, Ma.
As far as I know, there are no more rattlesnakes living here, but please probe any holes with a stick before sticking your hand in.
This can be a popular area, so please make sure that the boxes are rehidden properly so they cannot be seen from the road.

Rattlesnake Gutter Rd. is a dirt road that climbs about 1.5 miles through a steep, densely wooded ravine. The road falls away sharply on one side, almost 100 feet down and the rock cliffs rise more than twice as high on the other side of the ravine. Tangles of massive boulders and the huge, moss covered trunks of fallen trees line the sides of the ravine. The temperature drops noticeably as you walk in the dark shadow of looming pines. It has been called the Grand Canyon of Leverett.

To get to Rattlesnake Gutter Rd. From Rt.2 in Erving, go south on Rt.63. Stay on Rt.63 until you see the town line sign for Leverett. From the sign, drive .7 miles. Turn left onto Montague Rd. (There is a sign here that says Leverett Center). Drive on Montague Rd. for 1.5 miles. Turn left onto Rattlesnake Gutter Rd. Drive down the road until you get to the gate. Park at the gate and walk around the gate.

Walk up the road for about 20 minutes. You will go past a washout that is surrounded by jersey barriers. Continue up the road until you see where the gully is blocked by a rock fall. Keep walking up the road but look carefully at the cliff until you see the rock face’s “lips”.
Stand in the road directly in front of the lips. Go down the embankment towards the lips (Be extremely careful here so that you don’t slip or step in a hole..If you have children with you, I do not recommend letting them go down here as it is a dangerous area). Turn left and look to the left for a small “cave” in the wall under the road (Snails love caves) about 5-6 feet from where you came down. Gary is hiding in the front left corner of the cave.
While you are here, listen carefully. Sometimes you can here some water running underground below you.

**There is no in or pen in this box, so please bring your own. Bring bug spray**

Now return back to your car the same way that you came. It is all downhill from here.

Have fun and good luck.

Hike length: 1-2 miles
