This letterbox is located in Oswegatchie Nature Preserve in Niantic. It was created by Trevor & Amanda, ELHS Outdoor Pursuits students. It is a somewhat lengthy hike.

National Treasure

It was 1812; Charles Carroll was the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was also a member of a secret society known as the Masons, and he knew he was dying. He woke up his stable boy in the middle of the night and ordered him to take him to the White House to see Andrew Jackson, because it was urgent that he speak to the president. However, Jackson wasn’t in that night. But Charles Carroll had a secret. A treasure…..a treasure beyond all imagining….a treasure that had been fought over for centuries by tyrants, pharaohs, emperors, and warlords…..and every time it changed hands it grew larger. Then suddenly…it vanished. It didn’t reappear for more than a thousand years, when knights from the First Crusade discovered secret vaults beneath the Temple of Solomon. You see, the knights who found the vaults believed that the treasure was too great for any one man, not even a king. They brought the treasure back to Europe and took the name “The Knights of the Templar.” Over the next century they smuggled it out of Europe and they formed a new brotherhood called the Freemasons, in honor of the builders of the great temple. War followed. By the time of the American Revolution the treasure had been hidden again. By then the Masons included George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Paul Revere. They knew they had to make sure the treasure would never fall into the hands of the British. So they devised a series of clues and maps to its location. Over time the clues were lost or forgotten until only one remained, “The secret lies with Charlotte.” The Freemasons among our Founding Fathers left us the clues, like one on the back of a dollar bill (the unfinished pyramid and the all-seeing eye), guardians of the treasure. They’re speaking to us through these clues. So do you want to be one of these treasure protectors? Sure you do. Who wouldn’t want to see the largest treasure they have ever dreamed about? You must follow the series of clues to get to the treasure. If you pass and find the treasure you will be an official protector of the treasure of The Knights Templar. Shall we begin?

First you must enter the nature preserve and cross a bridge with a large pond on your left. This is where your journey begins. Follow the blue trail (with many roots and rocks coming out of the ground) up the hill. Be careful you don’t want to trip; you wouldn’t want to find the treasure gone before you got there and/or someonelse got it before you, would you? Which reminds me, you want to be a treasure protector, yes? Well, there are treasure hunters just a step behind you who want the treasure all for themselves. So hurry, don’t forget to follow the clues very carefully or they will get there before you.

You will come upon a three way intersection take a left to follow the blue trail. On your left there will be two trees and one behind it growing out of a rock.

WOW! Isn’t that different? Anyways….yes, yes, very cool…..now lets go. Keep following the blue trail and hurry. You will come to another large mountain on your left and you should just…..wait, what time is it? Darn, I think we missed our next clue. No wait! Day-light-savings-time we’re fine. Did you know the first man to think of day-light-savings was Benjamin Franklin? Anyways, continue following the blue path.

Continue to follow the blue trail until you come upon the 2nd green trail marker on your right.....if you look closely enough you will see the tree has the image of a man's face. The man is saying something to you, “Take this path up on your right to get to your treasure. But you must be very careful because the Masons built this a very long time ago, so this is where it gets tough….QUICK, I hear the other hunters….don’t look at me funny just because I don’t have ears doesn’t mean I cannot hear anything….QUICK….I’ll give them wrong directions so you can get ahead a little…GO!...Proceed up the hill before they see you!”

That's a lot of information from a tree, huh? When you walk up the hill there will be a large open area where you must keep walking straight until you come to the green/blue trail on your left, go down that path. You will come to an open area where you feel like you have lost all hope and all these clues just keep coming and are never ending. But you know these clues came from somewhere or else you wouldn’t have been looking for this treasure, now would you? Have no fear, I wouldn’t lead you wrong. Continue on the green/blue path.

Now hurry up…I bet the other hunters realized they went the wrong way by now. Follow the windy path till you get to the windy staircase. It represents the journey that had to be made to find the light of the truth. Climb down the green/blue trail very carefully, the tree told you it was old.

Stop when you come upon a green/blue trail marker with a left-hand arrow on it. To the right of this marker is a large moss covered boulder. Walk to the eastern side of this boulder and you shall see a small cave/crevice. Within this crevice is the treasure you seek.

Hope you enjoyed the journey of the lost treasure.
