This box was originally placed by Girl Scout Troop #60539, now disbanded as all of the girls grew up and entered high school. They decided to place the boxes here since all of the girls went to school at the Day School, and also because one of their earlier community projects was to place blue bird houses the girls had built along this trail.

This box was adopted for care and maintenance by Kermit on 27-May-2012. Enjoy!

Blue Bird Trail

Starting point: The John Gagnon Nature Trail at Kissacook Hill. Enter at the field behind the Norman E. Day School.

Number Of Stamps: 2 stamps are hidden. They are off the trail.

Approximate time to complete the trail: 1 hour.

Stamp #1

1. Enter the woods and follow the trail until you see the stone wall on your right.
2. Follow along the stone wall until you see a clearing with benches. Turn left to follow the trail up the hill.
3. Go under the parallel lines in the sky.
4. Go up the steep hill and continue along the trail.
5. On your right, look for a rock split in three with a brave hickory holding the largest piece in place.
6. Take 100 steps – you should be beside a family of rocks and birch trees.
7. Look up the hill a little further and to your left. Find the boulder that is shaped like a scalene triangle. Go to the far side of the rock and start hunting.

Would You Like To Keep Going?
Find The Second Stamp!

Stamp #2

1. Start at the triangle rock (From Stamp 1) and follow up the trail until you go under the “living arch.” As you go under it, you will see a large, peeling birch tree on your left.
2. Keep going along the trail searching for a lone birch in the middle of the path
3. From the lone birch, count 30 paces to the granite benches. (Try our listening activity! See the last page for instructions.)
4. The trail continues with a snake like turn. Follow the turn until you see a “birch tree triplet.”
5. From the Birch Triplet, take 20 steps and stop.
6. Turn so you’re at 3:00 and look deep into the woods (about 20 paces). Find the big elephant skin tree (beech tree) and walks towards it. The stamp is hidden near this tree. (If you went through the second living arch you went too far.)

To return, you can turn around and go back the way you came OR you can continue going on the trail to the parking lot at the Day School (note: if you choose to continue, make sure you do NOT turn onto the Orchard Hill trail and be sure to stay left at the water tower in order to end up back at the school).

Listening Activity
1. Take a load off and sit with your eyes closed on the granite benches.
2. Keep your eyes closed for three minutes and count how many nature sounds you can hear.
3. If you want, you can record what you heard in the stamping notebook at the end of the trail.
