The Hidden Prophet

Prophetstown was named for Wabokieshiek (White Cloud), the prophet who lived upon the land. Wabokieshiek served as an advisor to Black Hawk and took part in the Black Hawk War. It is known that all the Indians left around 1832, but one is still hiding in Riverside Cemetery waiting for you to find him. On our way to finding this little Indian, we are going to learn a little more history about Prophetstown.

To start this adventure, I recommend parking your car by St. Catherine’s Catholic Church. Walk South East on the sidewalk in front of the cemetery, parallel to East 3rd street, until you see the lone Civil War soldier near one of the entrances. This soldier stands to commemorate the battles of Shiloh, Gettysburg, Kennesaw and Resaca which took place during the Civil War. Whiteside County had more than 2,500 men join in the war movement.

Once you see the lone soldier, turn left and walk along the path through the cemetery. Walk until you see a tombstone from Donald Lindahl on your left. If you come to the ‘T’ in the road, you have gone too far. Once you see this tombstone, turn right and take 30 steps in the grass until you find George Brydia’s tombstone.

George Brydia was the mayor of Prophetstown for 20 years. He then was a District Legislator for 26 years. He was an active member of the Lions Club, donating a 2-story building on Washington Street to the Lions. This donation also helped with funding Prophetstown’s 4th of July celebration and fireworks. It is held annually at the State Park in Prophetstown, I recommend that you come back to Prophetstown on the 4th and check it out!

While facing George’s tombstone, turn to your right and you will see a vault with the name Mosher on it. Go ahead and walk to the vault, looking at the stained glass window in the back. The window has the universal symbol of medicine. Dr. Mosher came to Prophetstown in 1867 and was only 1 of 2 doctors in the whole county. In this vault Dr. James H. Mosher is buried with his two wives, his daughter and both of his sons. One of his sons, George, also went on to become a doctor.

After looking at the window, turn to your right and walk towards the caretakers building. Pass this building there is a tree on the left side along the road. Turn left here and take 20 steps. At the base of the next tree, next to Mr. Tornow, you should find the Indian who is waiting for you. Please let me know how your adventure went!
