In 1846 the Donner Party headed out from Independence, Missouri toward California. Many people died and most everything which could go wrong did go wrong. For more info:

For more info. on conestoga wagons which many of the party used to haul their belongings and sometimes rode in:

On the Donner party was a young woman named Lavinia Graves. She eventually made it over the Sierras alive. On a wagon train which successfully crossed the mountains and into California just prior to the Donner Party debacle was John Cyrus. Later they married and both are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in Calistoga. You will be able to locate their graves via information on a board at the entrance to the cemetery.
To locate the Calistoga Conestoga Letterbox first note the three yew trees on each side of the cemetery entrance. Follow the direction the three trees on the right point to and head about 30 steps in that direction to Samuel Collins. From there find the Watsons and then locate their north corner. About 42 steps up the path from that corner wave to old Olive. Go up the hill a couple more steps to a large deciduous oak tree. On its south side ground-level you will find a hollow. At the back of that hollow to the left behind some leaf litter and a rock you will find the Calistoga Conestoga Letterbox. After stamping in and reclosing everything carefully please return the box and raise it up an inch or so in case water drainage is not good in the hollow! That’s if it ever rains again around here . . .
Thanks for coming!
