Clue Difficulty: Moderate, research of local area helpful
Hike Difficulty: Difficult, as trail is very overgrown

This letterbox is box number eight of a series of letterboxes placed by Elizabeth Bagdonas and Judy Loether and originally published in the Bolton Common, Bolton, Massachusetts' local newspaper, during the summer of 2000. These boxes are now maintained by a local group of letterboxers and the clues to this series are now being made available to the Internet community.

Part of the inspiration of the original series was to introduce locals to the wonderful resources of the conservation lands in their area. Since the original focus for these letterboxes was the local community several of the clues have "local references", we have made minor modifications to the original clues to correct for changes that have taken place in the local conditions but have attempted to preserve the challenge and creativity found in the original clues. We hope you take up this challenge and use the resources available to you on the Internet and elsewhere to solve the riddles and stamp in.

Clues

PONDER THE WILD LETTERBOX

Main Street is certainly pointing the way
In olden times choo choo tracks here did lay.
Go-over bridge and do follow the trail,
Watch! Poison ivy might try to derail.
See the rock wall along your left.
Now! Find the tree that lightning did cleft.
Walk straight ahead then look to the right,
See this great tree oh it is such a sight.
Turn right around and then clickety clack,
Go eighteen paces you're walking right back.
Now if a letterbox there you might find,
Snap tight that lid when you leave it behind.

Notes added by Rocklun:

Southpaw and I found this box on 12/7/2012, after a LOT of bushwhacking through briars. The trail is completely overgrown, and the starting point along the road isn't marked. We never found the "tree that lightning did cleft," and the "great tree" isn't exactly a giant. The rest of the clues are accurate, including the mention of poison ivy.

The best time to attempt this box is after the foliage has died back. We both felt that it would be impossible to hike this in the summer.

Hint: From the far end of the stone wall, walk back approximately 50 steps. GOOD LUCK!!!
