With the most diverse landscape, Orcas Island offers the best recreational opportunities in the San Juan Islands. One of the best places to visit on the island is Moran State Park, which is a mecca for hikers, bikers, campers and outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes, and home to Mount Constitution and this letterbox. The view from the top of Mount Constitution, the San Juan Islands' highest point, is among the best anywhere. The drive will take a good 20 minutes to reach the 2,409 ft. summit, so be sure to leave plenty of time before sunset when heading up. A stone observation tower allows visitors to climb high enough above the summit for a 360-degree view. On a clear day you can see Vancouver to the north, the Cascade Range to the east, and the rest of the San Juans and Gulf Islands to the south.
Directions:
From the Orcas Island ferry terminal, drive 9 miles on Orcas Road to Eastsound. Continue through town and in 1 mile, turn right on Olga Road. The Moran State Park entrance is a little more than 3 miles ahead. Go past Cascade Lake and drive up Mt. Constitution Road on your left to the summit.
Clues:
From the summit parking area, walk the short path to the lookout. Go to the top of the stone tower for the best views. From the base of the tower, follow the trail heading south downhill for about 90 steps. You will come to a post with an arrow pointing left for Little Summit. Take this trail heading south for about 55 steps. Look to your left uphill about 20 feet and find a dead tree laying on the ground, supported by its branches, and pointing southwest. Walk up to it and step over its left (northeast) end. Look under the roots of a live pine tree for the box, covered with rocks. Please re-cover well.
