Very kid friendly!!

These letterboxes are at Hopeville State Park in Griswold, CT. off 395 at exit 86, follow signs to the main entrance. This is a CT State Park open year round to walkers, only partially accessible to cars in the winter months and dogs are allowed everywhere except in the campground during the summer. Busy holiday weekends there may be fees to enter.

Park in the main parking area on your left as you pull into the park. Once you have parked and are on foot, exit the lot the way you came in taking a left. Head down the main road until you reach the 1st stop sign. Across the road from the stop sign is a stonewall. Parallel to the sign behind the wall is box #1.

Return to the stop sign and continue on the main road bearing right at the fork. Walk up a gradual hill taking the road to the left as it comes. On this road there is a pull off area to the left with a small path opening. In the summer the path is covered in soft moss that is fun to walk thru barefoot, although there are now a lot of fallen trees partially covering. Find the soft mossy grass patch, to the left is an older fallen tree. Buried in the roots is Box #2, Peace Fish newly hid 4/2019.

Exit down the grassy hill toward the main road that leads to the campground. Follow this road South, before the “pump out” area there is a small brook on your right with a bike path that leads you on another path. Take this path to the GIGANTIC tree. Just North of this tree is a 2 sister tree. Buried in her V is box #3, Peace Bear newly hid 4/2019. Beware of muggles.

Continue North into the woods on this path. You will quickly come to the end of the path with Canoe campsites to your left and the parking area to your right. Exit the woods thru the parking area. Take a left when you are back on the road and another left at the stop sign. You should now be heading to the swimming area. Just before you reach the beach you will see a restroom on your left and a parking/picnic area on your right. Head into the parking area toward the message board. Standing at the message board head South to the corner of the lot where a path leading up a steep hill lies. There has been a lot of clear cutting to the right of the path. Go up the hill and follow to the split in the path. Stay to the right and look on the island between the path for a 2 sister tree on your left. Box #4 is hidden here Peace Turtle. Continue following this path and it leads back to the parking area where you started. I have put small rolls of paper in boxes 2-3 and plan on revisiting with notepads and better containers.
