Austin College is a four-year liberal arts school located in Sherman, Texas. It was founded in 1849 and is the oldest college in Texas still operating under the original charter. It was the first school to grant a graduate degree in Texas which continues with the Austin Teacher Program (ATP), a five year program that culminates with a BA and MAT. AC is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). It was founded through Dr. Daniel Baker, a Princeton-educated missionary. It began as a men's college and integrated with women in 1918. Early members of the board of directors included Sam Houston and Anson Jones. The school prides itself on teaching students to be critical thinkers and using those skills in service to the community.

I envisioned creating a series of letterboxes dedicated to the colleges and universities we have attended in our family. I carved this stamp about two months ago and had not had an opportunity to make the trip to plant the box. When I found out that a former professor had died suddenly and a memorial service was being held, I decided to plant it while I was on campus.

Now for the directions:
Make your way to Abell Library. I attended Austin College (and my brothers followed after me) for the rich educational opportunities. Completely unintentionally, I turned to education as a life direction. Locate the general section about education in the stacks. At the beginning of the section, go to the lowest shelf and look underneath. School colors are crimson and gold. I tried stamping with both. If you have a darker gold than I have, it will make a nice two-toned image.

Please remember library hours and holidays. Summer hours are shortened. You can find these hours posted on this website (http://abell.austincollege.edu/Abell/about/hours.html) Please be aware that the library is a busy place. Abell Library is used more by students than any other library of schools I have attended. Happy hunting!
