Bear Creek Camp and Conference Center is an outdoor ministry of the Northeastern and Southeastern Pennsylvania Synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church In America. Their facilities are open year-round, as a co-ed resident Summer Camp during the summer months, and as a Conference and Environmental Center the rest of the year. I spent many years at Bear Creek as a camper when I was young. I learned a lot about God and about myself, about friendship and love, about nature and how to care for it. If you have children who are completing grades 1-12, please consider sending them for a week or two to Bear Creek. The entrance to the camp road is located just 1/2 mile south of the "WILKES-BARRE" interchange of the NE Extension of the PA Turnpike (I-476), on PA-115.
I wanted to plant a box in honor of Bear Creek Camp, but not on camp property. I planted in at the Seven Tubs Nature Area, just 3 miles north of the camp. It's a beautiful area that's a bit wetter than the camp, but still has the same sort of feel to it.
One warning: I planted this box just minutes after a rainstorm. I did wipe out once on the trail due to slippery conditions (mildly skinned knee, broken pride), mostly because I was impatient and not paying attention. So do be cautious if the trail is wet.
To find Seven Tubs, just go 2.5 miles north of the Turnpike on PA-115. The entrance is on your left. Drive in and park in the main lot.
CLUES
* Walk down the road, and go on the paved trail heading southwest from the park sign. Don't cross the dumpster!
* Cross the bridge, and head 280* on the blue-blazed Audubon Trail.
* Water will rush to your right as you walk.
* The trail splits into higher/lower, but they rejoin shortly. (This will happen multiple times...so long as you see blue blazes, you're just fine.)
* The trail curves left, then heads uphill.
* You'll cross another bridge.
* When you come to a Y, go right, along the stream.
* Eventually you'll cross another stream, this time on rocks, and then enter a clearing.
* Continue on the blue trail just a bit, until you reach a gnarled 3-tree with four blue blazes (one fading), near a small waterfall.
* From the 3-tree, go seven paces at 140* to a large V-tree.
* Thence, spot a faint trail at 235*. Head up the trail 18 paces to a tall evergreen.
* Suspicious Pile of Rocks (SPOR) around back.
