On Sept. 19, the River Rat went missing. He has been recarved and replanted in another spot nearby his original home. The clues have been revised to reflect the change.

From our perspective, letterboxing is a pastime ( or addiction ) for everyone. Wether young or old, singles or couples, families with children, seasoned letterboxers, or new participants, it's still for you if you are out there doing it and loving it. And although we are fairly new to this pastime and haven't planted all that many boxes, we still feel badly because every box we plant is not for everybody. And so today, we say to you, " Welcome to the land of opportunity". Because we believe this box could be for just about everyone. ( We hope. ) So we ask that you read on, until it seems right for you. No matter who you happen to be, there is no ink in the box, bug spray is a definite must, and please move away from the plant area to stamp in. Thanks. Now onto the clues:

Option # 1: This is the way we hiked it. If you are a Treasure Hiker, this hike is a 1.75 mile round trip hike. If you choose the second option, it's a little less. To find the River Rat make your way to Satan's Kingdom Recreation Area just past the Canton/New Hartford town line on Route 44. Pull in and park at the far end of the parking lot. If there is a parking attendant for tubing there, just tell him you are just hiking, and he will let you through to the end of the parking area. From the far end of the parking area, follow the dirt path and pick up the yellow/ blue trail on the right. Go under the bridge. A little further on, the blue trail will go up hill to the right. Follow blue uphill to Satan's Kingdom Road. This short uphill is very steep and rocky. Be careful. If you are not comfortable with this route, go on to Option #2.

Option # 2 :(Probably the better of the first two options.) Take Satan's Kingdom Road, a left turn off of Route 44, just before Satan's Kingdom Recreation Area. There are two pull offs with limited roadside parking on the right, shortly after entering the road.

Regardless of what option you have chosen, continue up Satan's Kingdom Road for a short way. The trail entrance for the blue trail will be on your left. Follow blue along a narrow path . If you are anything like me, don't look down. Soon you will come to a small stream. Cross over, and go right to a dirt road. Take a left on the dirt road ( blue trail ) . Follow blue past the intersection of the Tipping Rock Loop. Continue on straight on blue. When the road forks, take the path to the left. This is part of the Shelter Four Loop ( blue, green dot). Soon you will see a green gate up ahead, and the blue/ green dot trail heads into the woods on the right. There is a wooden post here marking Crosscut Rd. and Shelter Four Loop. Go to the wooden post. From the post, continue on the blue green dot trail until you count four blazed trees. Stop at the fourth tree. Go left to a large 2 sister pine. From the pine, look left for a tree with a cutout in the bottom. The Rat is hiding here.

Option #3: This option is for you if you've got small children, or just aren't able to do the hike. We are so very glad to be able to include you as well. If you are familiar with the area, or just good with maps, take the Ramp from Canton. Very slowly though, it's loaded with potholes. If you have a truck, an old car, or 4 wheel drive you are good to go. Don't try this with your brand new BMW though. Just take it slow, and you'll be fine. Follow the ramp until you come to a wide area with parking on both sides. Park your car and continue on to the green gate. From here, walk through the gate and head up the dirt path a short way until you come to the wooden post on the left. Then follow the clues already given.

We hope that everyone enjoys their visit with the River Rat. Happy Letterboxing!!!
