At the dedication of the Lady Bird Johnson Grove in Redwood National Park numerous dignitaries were present and/or took part in the ceremonies August 27, 1969. Richard Nixon was the current President of the United States. His remarks may be read here:

The letterbox is dedicated to Mr. Nixon who often struck a pose making the sign of V for victory.
To find this letterbox drive to the beautiful Lady Bird Johnson Grove just north of Orick on Hwy. 101. Hit the trail and make your way to trail marker #5. Proceed to the V for victory tree at 310 degrees and about 36 steps. From the trail go around the right side of tree about 18 steps until you come to what might be considered another V part of the tree trunk. About two feet up on the right leg of the V shoved in a small crevice behind some natural debris will be the V is for Victory Letterbox.
