On the island of Lana'i, Hawaii State Sporting Clays contest was held at Lana’i Pine and we had a contingent of shooters from the SoCal Shooting Team. Most were junior and sub-junior shooters, but a few older folks were sprinkled among the group.
We did represent California quite well as our group placed HOA in non-Hawaiians, 2nd in the open category, 2nd in AA open, 2nd in C class open, and 2nd in D class open.

In the 5-stand competition we garnered HOA, 3rd in C class, and 3rd in D class.

If you want to try a World Class Shooting facility contact Dennis at Lana’i Pine and he will set up a bit of “breaking clays”.

#1 Unicorn Fish

Prior to the shoot we were able to enjoy the beach at Hulopo’e Bay and we walked out towards Pu’upehe (Sweetheart Rock).

This area is Manele-Hulopo’e Marine Life Conservation District and surfing, swimming, and snorkeling is pretty good at this location just off the beach.

From the beach below the hotel, walk south along the path past the last shower and pass through 4 green sentinels. At the last blue sign (there are two) turn left and walk up the slope towards the cliff. When the path goes between a bush/tree on your right and the rest of the bushes on your left look under a single red lava rock in front (path side) of the bush/tree on the right.

Please use stealth and rehide carefully. Mahalo.

#2 Nuku nuku

Most folks stay at Manele Bay Resort but since we wanted close access to the shooting range we opted to stay at the Lodge at Ko’ele. We certainly weren’t disappointed in the accommodations….Wow!

It was pleasantly cooler in the mountains and what can you say about 5 star accommodations other than …Wow!

Transportation shuttles every ½ hour is included in your costs, but if you stay at the Lana’i City Hotel in Lana’i City there is a fee for the shuttles. Even day-trippers can use the shuttles for a fee. Touring both Resorts shouldn’t be a problem for most seasoned letterboxers, just look like you belong.

At the Lodge very near the Gift Shop you will find an old oriental herb/medicine cabinet, and everyone leaves a business card in a drawer for good luck. The Nuku nuku letterbox can be found in the lower right hand corner of the cabinet. It is wedged at the rear of the drawer.

I left my business card in the front part so it looks like that is as far as the drawer comes out. Use stealth and rehide carefully. Mahalo.

Both of these letterboxes are orphans and will probably be pretty lonesome as most folks opt for Maui, or one of the other more popular islands. If you find them let us know.
