Pelham: Monk's Cave

Distance: 300 yards
Difficulty: Easy

Directions: From the Intersection of Route 9 and Route 202 in Belchertown, drive north on 202 for 4.3 miles. Turn left onto Packardville Road and drive 1.7 miles. On the left past mail box 133 is a dirt/grass road. The graveyard is not clearly visible from the street. You can either park at the road enterance and walk or drive in 200 yard on a bumpy back woods road to Steven's cemetery.

History: "Monk's Cave" ledgend says there is the small cave by Steven's graveyard once used by monks. When you walk toward the graveyard do not enter, but instead go to the right and follow a short path through the woods. The cave has only a two-foot opening and is located about 50 feet (or 20 steps) from the right corner of the graveyard. It is circular inside, and is about five feet wide by four feet high. Many have wondered if it is a "monk's cave" or an oddly shaped root cellar. -Quabbin (A History and Explorers Guide) by Michael Tougias.

Letterbox Directions: Stand facing the vault doors in front of the cemetery. Walk right (or west) to the front corner of the cemetery. At the corner, the box is hidden behind the first stone to the right of the corner stone. Bring an ink pad or markers as there is none in the letterbox. Rehide well.
