VT State Symbol Series

Driving east on VT-15 in Johnson you will see a fairly new trail head parking area on the left. Look for the brown hiker sign, Park in this dirt parking area. This is a small extension of the Long Trail leading to the Lamoille Bridge. If you come to the Forget-Me-Not you have gone too far.

This series is based on Vermont state symbols. Each box is a different state symbol. Wear sneakers and bring bug spray.

*Red Clover(Trifolium pratense) the state flower:
Start at the beginning of the trail at the opening of fence (in parking lot). Behind the birch railing on the right you will see a small pine tree, at the base of the tree you will find the red clover box covered with rocks & bark. Be sure to hide very well as this is visible from trail.

*Morgan Horse the state animal:
After second footbridge you will see a large birch on the left, veer left off trail nine steps to twin tree. Take nine more steps to a dead fallen tree. Follow tree upwards to two tree trunks and two trees connected at base, in the center of this quad tree there is the Morgan horse box, covered in sticks and bark. Follow same path back to trail.

*Hermit Thrush(Catharus guttatus) the state bird:
As trail heads upward it takes a sharp left around two small rocks, stop there. On your right is a big tree with white blaze turn right off trail. 20 steps downhill to the stump covered in moss. Head downhill to big double birch. Turn 90 degrees to the right, take 19 steps to the next double birch tree. Under the roots you will find the Hermit Thrush box.

*Monarch Butterfly(Danaus plexippus)the state
butterfly:
There will be a huge boulder on left near a white blazed tree, with back towards boulder look between two trees in front of you. You will see a light gray tombstone shaped rock up on the hill. Start at the two trees; take 16 steps to a stump with a little tree growing out of it. Head uphill to a tree that is snapped over at a 90 degree angle. Follow the trunk to a standing tree caught up in its branches. On the back side of that tree is the Monarch Butterfly box hidden in the roots.

*Milk the state beverage: (clues update 6/5/11)
Continue on trail. At the top of the next small hill, where three trees share one trunk, the trail forks. Go left to go up a slight hill. Stop when two rocks lay flat in the trail (one rock is about 2.5-3 feet wide). Look to your right and you will see 2 boulders sticking out of the hillside. The Milk Letterbox is under the "top" boulder on the far side, near the tree.

*White Whale Fossil (Delphinapterus leucas) the state fossil: THIS BOX HAS BEEN REMOVED TEMPORARILY BECAUSE COVER WAS NOT PUT BACK ON BOX SO EVERYTHING IN IT WAS WET. WILL BE REPLACING ASAP! (6/5/11)
Check this website to read the story of the Charlotte white whale http://www.uvm.edu/whale/
Stop at next wood plank bridge, take 18 steps left towards the cave in the boulders. Look to the right, there is a birch tree whose roots grow over the rock. Follow those roots down; under the roots and rock you will find the White Whale Fossil box covered in branches and a triangular stone (be sure to replace the stone).

*Northern Leopard Frog the state amphibian:
Follow trail to the ladder leading down to the river, use caution with ladder it may not be tied down. Follow white blazed trail crossing the river (check rocks for blazes) heading to the suspension bridge. Once at the bridge stand at its first step. Look to the right at about 2 o’clock, there you will see one of the cables used to suspend the bridge. Stand on the cement base with back to the bridge. Turn 90 degrees to your left. In front of you should see a small rock flat rock, look under the ledge on the side nearest you and you will find the Northern Leopard Frog box about elbow deep under the rock covered by a stick.

You have now found all 7 VT Symbol Series Letterboxes. Have a splash in the river and turn around and follow the same trail back to your car.
