#2 In the Animal Shelter Series
Rated very easy, a drive up.
From Mansfield Center take Route 195 North to Clovermill Road. Follow Clovermill Road and at the crest of the hill take a right into the driveway for Bicentennial Pond, the Public Works garage and the Animal Shelter. Take a left at the fork and then a right into the Animal Shelter parking lot. Park here. If the shelter is open, take a moment to meet and greet the pets here. Perhaps you'd like to bring along some dog biscuits, cat treats or toys for the residents.
Return to the front gate. Facing the shelter, follow the outside of the fence to your right. At the corner post, follow the fence along until you see the gravestones on your right. First is Sparky, the first guard dog. Then Snuggles, who was the shelter's kitty mascot for all of his long life. Next is Sebastian the Saint Bernard's marker, he was the next guard dog. Finally, on the other side of the pine tree is Mack's grave. Take a bearing of 180 degrees and take 18 steps to the stone with 4 tree trunks. From there a bearing of 210 degrees and 4 more steps will bring you to a pile of rocks and old stone steps. Mack's letterbox is hidden in the pile of rocks. Can you tell what breed of dog Mack was?
While you are in the area, you might want to check out two other nearby letterboxes: "Bicentennial Pond, Silly Songs and Poets" and "Paw Print."
