RETIRED

Back in February 1986, during Greenfield's annual winter carnival, my kids won the sledin' contests on Beacon Field. The sledin' hill was at the base of the Poet's Seat Tower. It was much less over grown back then, so your ride started much higher then it does today. The height gave you great distance and you could make it almost out to the center of the ball field.
Apparently there had been a ski jump on that same hill back at the turn of the century. Horse drawn sleighs would take the skiers to the top on a series of switch back trails. The skiers would make their jump and take the sleighs back up (early ski lifts??). My kids loved to sled there then drive around town looking at all the snow sculptures to warm up. We have since moved away but the memory of "sledin' to victry" on that icy cold day still lingers on in the hearts of two little boys who, at age 9 and 7, brought home the gold to our house.
I know the title "Sledin' to Victry" is misspelled but I copied it off of an old school essay written by that same 7 year old, 23 years ago, and I don't have the heart to change the title now.

Head over to the Beacon Field parking lot next to the sledin' hill. Park in the last space next to the log barrier. Find the trail entrance with the large rock. Up the trail to the first switchback. Look for a tree growing out of a rock. Your winter ride is waiting for you under some stones on the ledge.
