The Mountain Trout Letterbox is nestled next to a beautiful 1 mile loop nature trail at the Leadville Fish Hatchery. The trail hosts a beautiful stream that winds its way throughout the trail, several beautiful lakes, and a playground with picnic tables at the top. It is a trail that can easily be hiked by children.
To find the Mountain Trout Letterbox:
From Leadville, head south on Highway 24 and turn right on Colorado 300 West. Follow signs to the Fish Hatchery (about 2.5 miles).
Since the nature trail is a loop, there are two ways to start the path. Locate the trail head that is behind the hatchery, across the road from the restrooms. You will see big wooden signs.
About 1/10 of a mile up the trail, just after the beautiful cascading stream on the right, look for an information sign about the importance of dead trees in nature.
Off in the distance directly behind the Dead Tree sign, about 25 paces, do you see a large rounded rock?
Lying on the ground next to the large rock is an old, hollowed out decaying log. Search the hollow log as Winnie the Pooh searches for a honey hive and you will find the very 1st letterbox our family has ever hidden!
Please hide it back the way you found it, and let us know if we need to make repairs. Happy Hunting!!!!
*If you start the trail at the other end, by the parking lot on the left across from the fish tanks, start looking for the dead tree information sign after the playground and lake that has a beautiful view of Mt. Elbert in the distance.
