Traveling from Columbia in Caldwell Parish to Harrisonburg in Catahoula Parish you will be skirting along the banks of the beautiful Ouachita River. But when you get to the end of Hwy 559 the only way to cross the river is by ferry.

When I was a child we made this trip at least once a month to visit my great grandparents who lived on the other side of the river. It was a scary but exciting trip to trust this barge to ferry us across to the other side.

Drive from Columbia on Hwy 4 east for 3 or 4 miles, then turn right on Hwy 559 toward Enterprise. When you see the sign for the Duty Ferry, STOP. The ferry attendant will wave you onboard. Turn off your engine and enjoy the ride!

The letterbox is located at the Jim Bowie Relay Station Family Restaurant which is on Hwy 124 at the intersection of Duty Ferry Ramp. The restaurant is open on Friday and Saturday with live entertainment. It’s a fun place to visit and so much more than just a good place to get fried catfish or steaks. It’s like a mini theme park with a small village including a chapel, furnished one room school house, a boat house, grist mill, etc., and it’s FREE to look around. See http://www.jimbowiesrelaystation.com/history.html for details.

Find the Kings Boathouse where you’ll see the boat made from one cypress log. Go inside the house and find the letterbox at the 4th post on the right (2nd post from the back). It is wedged behind the post and the outside lumber at the ground level. Be discreet removing it, and then take your prize to the gazebo or maybe inside the chapel to stamp in.

Then go exploring! We saw an alligator from the covered bridge, and an old casket in the grist mill. We loved the antique tractors and gas pumps. Have fun!
NOTE THE RESTAURANT BURNED DOWN! But the box is still intact!
