This beautiful carving was sent to me for my very first event by Uneksia (smile). I sent her a photograph of "the most beautiful headstone in my county" and she sent me this beautiful letterbox. I cried when I opened it. I memorializes the family of one of my Sandusky County genealogy members' family.

Directions:
The West Union Cemetery is found on Route 600 in Gibsonburg. Don't forget to stop by the LAST ROSE OF SUMMER box on 600 as well. So to get to the bone yard go west on Route 20 in Fremont, until you get to Hessville. You then turn south on Route 600 and travel about 5.5 miles. Don't make any turns... you will go straight thru town.

Clues:
You will see the WEST UNION CEMETERY on your left. Take the entrance next to the Cemetery sign. Once in the cemetery turn left at the first road and park next to the first large tree, on the left, that you come to. Look towards the large hedges on your left. There is a headstone, between the hedges, in the shade. Get down on your knees and brush the dust and dirt off the base of the stone. You are just sprucing up a very old neglected stone, they died many years ago and may not have any relatives left. So for today you are adopting them.

This headstone belongs to a mother and father.

Now reach in behind John's side of the stone, next to the hedge and remove the small green lock n' lock box. Please make sure it is re-hidden very well. It could never be replaced and means a lot to our county genealogy history.

Continue on the same road to the very next large tree and park. In front of this tree notice the small headstones for a possible son and mother. His name is Ralph and he died in 1899. She possibly died in childbirth at the age of 21. Her stone says 1878 - 1899. Notice how crisp the stone is cut even though it is very old.

Now you can walk to your left and see the Immel headstone up close. How sad she looks.

Continue to the end of the road but turn to the right. Now you will pass the old white hand pump, if you need to wash your hands or get a drink. Park here and admire the small garden on your left.

Continue straight thru the intersection. Stop here and notice the huge rock that had been made into a headstone. There is an old green bronze marker here for Ralph P Engle. What was his title with the Toledo Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America?

Continue to the end of the road and exit straight thru the gates. Turn right and then at the end of the street another right puts you back on Route 600.
