Terrain Difficulty: Easy (slight slope, .5 mile RT)
Status: alive
Once the center of Santa Fe’s hydroelectric activity, Santa Fe Canyon Preserve is today a peaceful nature preserve brimming with wildflowers, willows, ponderosa pine, songbirds, deer and bear. So take a break from shopping and come enjoy this songbird.
Directions:
From I25 take the Old Pecos Trail exit into Santa Fe. Go north into the city's center and at Paseo de Peralta take a right. Go round the bend and take a right on East Alameda (the next light). Wind along for about a mile until it ends at a three-way stop. Take a left here onto Upper Canyon Road and drive about a mile until it merges with Cerro Gordo Road on the left. Turn onto Cerro Gordo and immediately on your right is a parking lot for the Santa Fe Canyon Preserve.
Clues:
Take the interpretive loop trail for about 1/4 mile to a fork in the trail. Go right to avoid mud for about 90 steps. Look right and uphill for 2 small pine trees 15 steps away, with a smaller pine tree 5 steps to the left of them. The letterbox is at the base of this smaller tree under rocks. Please replace as described.
