This trail gets pretty buggy and thick in the middle of summer, but is absolutely beautiful in the spring and fall. Easy for kids.

Head North out of Hackensack approximately 6 miles to the Chippewa National Forest picnic site on the right side of the road. Locate the trail entrance on the North end of the picnic area. Head out onto the gently rolling trail. Count off 4 bridges. After you cross the 4th bridge, pace off 38 steps up the hill through the two HUGE oak trees. Then head down the hill until you reach the bench overlooking the lake. With your back to the bench, facing away from the lake, turn to 30 degrees NE and look for a cluster of about 9 Basswood trees. They should be about 18 paces into the woods. The letterbox is behind the cluster cover by branches. Leave a note letting us know about your trip or any other letterboxes you would recommend searching for. Then, please return it to it's original position.

You can either back track to the parking lot or continue on the trail that circles the lake. There is also a beautiful "hidden lake" once you're a little more than half way around the lake. Look for a trail heading to the left that will take you up over a ridge. Great place for a picture.
