From the ferry landing area (Welch St.) take a right onto Island Ave. The road turns to the left in about a block, gradually going uphill. Turn at the 2nd paved road on the right, Whitehead Ave., and head downhill. At the bottom, go left onto Seashore Ave. / Maple Ave. Follow about 2 blocks, taking the 2nd right after the 8th Maine Regiment Museum. This is where Seashore Ave. turns to the right and Maple continues straight. After about 1/10 of a mile, Seashore turns to the left and the beautiful ocean views become very visible. At the point of the turn STOP. You should see a bench and a low rock wall with an opening (under a street light) leading to a rocky beach loaded with smooth rounded stones. (It would be fun to research why this is as only a short way down the beach, the rocks turn to jagged shards that can break like glass.) Carefully enter the beach at the break in the wall under the streetlight. (This is about 20 paces to the right of the bench and right at the point where Seashore Ave. turns to the left.) Here you can see a small island straight ahead with a lonely lighthouse. From the beach side, carefully walk along the wall toward the bench about 10 paces. Here the wall gets more jagged. Under the large piece of rock that has 3 large rocks protruding from the top (almost like monster teeth!) you’ll find the Lost Lighthouse. Be careful! It is disguised with black tape and well hidden under and behind small moveable rocks and there are other large stones further down the wall that like look like monster teeth. Please re-hide well as letterboxes don’t seem to last long on PI and I can’t return until summer ’10 to check on it!
