****RETIRED series 2016*** ****check out the NEW Scott's Cove 2.0 series 2017*******

August 9, 2016 Update
Mother Nature Loves to Redecorate, so we are doing a little remodeling ourselves, making new stamps, boxes & new clues, so this series is inactive for now....check back later for the redesign!

Box#1 - Scots Cove -- found 8/9/2016
Box #2 - A Funny Place for A Fish -- found 8/9/2016
Box #3 - Turtle Crossing -- sadly definitely missing 8/9/2016

Directions: From I95 take Rt 216W, Left on Leishear Rd, Right on Scaggsville Rd, Left on Harding Rd, follow Harding, the parking lot is on the left.
Great place to picnic & fish & boat (bring your own). To fish or boat you will need a WSSC use permit.

Difficulty: Box #1 easy #2 a challenge #3 easy

1 pace = 2 footfalls (equal about 5 feet in length)

Box #1 Scots Cove

Head to the playground & from the engineer's seat box
yourself in (at 240 degrees SW is where you can park for boxes #2 & #3). Go 112 degrees East/SE, cross the small stream, where the path splits keep to the right. Find the large rock with the view of the cove >if you're lucky you might spot a turtle. Follow the trail through the woods to the southern most tip. With the reservoir in front of you
Search the shoreline for an old metal signpost, from the signpost go 3 paces 38degrees N/NE. Look for a tree with a hollow base & you've found the place.
Across the cove West is #2's nest (a funny place for a fish).

Follow trail back to playground & hike/drive around to the boat ramp.

Box #2 A Funny Place for a Fish
1 pace = 2 footfalls (about 5 feet in length)

From the boat ramp, pass the modern day outhouse & enter the woods --or if the outhouse is gone.....from the
south side of the boat ramp area enter the woods between the launch area no parking signs.
Be careful as there may be trees down. Check out the brush piles (& logs from downed trees) for wildlife, we saw several 5-lined skinks & deer were about too!
Follow the trail past the boats & canoes
(or the hitching posts if the boats are missing).
Look for the last metal boat hitching post,#200. It will have the # painted onthe side you cannot see!
**Stand on the trail directly across from post #200, from this point follow the trail & count 27 paces (real paces 2 foot falls=bout 5 feet). Remember this spot.**
Go past post 200 & follow the trail thru the woods & thru the ferns-fern valley, as you head toward the southwest point. You will pass thru fern valley, entering into a low tree canopy area & then the trail will open up.
Look for the Large rock with a double tree, it will be on the left. The rock is not on the water's edge, but inside the woods. This rock like the one in the photo is only about 2ft tall, but it is long. The double tree is very big.
Between the trail & the rock will be LOTS of shrubs-they will be as tall as you! The shrubs will be hiding the rock, so look ground level! The rock will be about 10ft off the trail on your left. It may be easier to just look for the double tree!
From the rock, stand in the same direction you were hiking from & you should see the reservoir on your left (the causeway for the boaters to get to the boat ramp), as well as in front of you (the larger reservoir).
This is a great place to watch & listen to the birds...The fish you seek is at the base of the tree and rock, surrounded by other rocks. Watch out for stickers.
Now you can see how bit the rock is!!

Box #3 - Turtle Crossing

After finding Box #2, head back the way you came, passed
all the ferns, looking out for turtles in the rain.
On your left be on the lookout for the LARGE snakey vine on the ground that curls around & heads up into the trees.
The vine is thicker than your arm. One of the vines was cut just below knee-level. **You were here at this spot just a box ago! Remember?)**
If you passed post 200 you've gone too far. (If you want the more challenging clues look below for the *).
On your left, look for the large double pine tree deep in the woods, about 23 steps from the trail. There will be a dead tree with lots of bird holes between you & the double pine tree. The turtle is resting behind the double pine tree. Watch out for stickers.

*more challenging clues: See the tree with all the bird holes next to the vine. From that tree take 3 steps back the way you came. Then follow the vine visually from the ground Upward, looking beyond the vine for the double pine tree~ about 23 steps from the path. The turtle is hidden behind the double pine tree. Watch out for stickers.

Hope you enjoyed our 1st LBs.
