Box 1--“From My Cold Dead Hands”

The National Rifle Association of America or N.R.A. is an American non-partisan non-profit organization which lists, as its goals, the protection of the Second Amendment of the United States Bill of Rights, and the promotion of firearm ownership rights, marksmanship, firearm safety and the protection of hunting and self-defense in the United States. The N.R.A. was established November 17, 1871 in New York by William Conan Church and George Wood Wingate as the American Rifle Association. Its first President was the former Senator and famous Civil War Union Army General Ambrose Burnside. Also U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant served as the NRA’s eighth president and General Philip H. Sheridan as its ninth. Today, the headquarters is in Fairfax, Virginia with members reaching nearly 4 million. The President today is Ronald Schmeits with Executive Vice President Wayne La Pierre.

The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution is the part of the Bill of Rights that protects a right to keep and bear arms from infringement by the federal government. The Second Amendment guarantees the right of individuals to possess firearms. As quoted from NRA President from 1999-2003-- Charlton Heston: “We have to pass on to America in the 21st. century the same Bill of Rights, that the wise, old, dead white guys that invented this country passed on to us.”

On May 20th, 2000, at the closing of his speech, at the 129th. NRA Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, Charlton Heston paused to pick up a replica of a Revolutionary War Musket and continued “As we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say these words again for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: “From my cold dead hands!”

Directions and Clues to the Letterbox:
From the intersection of Routes 66 and 85 in Hebron, take Route 85 South toward Colchester and travel about 3 miles to Route 207 on your LEFT. Take Route 207 and travel 0.5 miles to the incline where the Air Line Trail crosses Route 207. Park on the LEFT side and proceed to the yellow metal gate. Walk the path and count 70 steps with your left foot. You will see 3 rocks on the bank on your right and see the largest tree in this area of the woods on your LEFT. Go 20 total steps to this tree and between the tree and rock will be a box awaiting your stamping in. Please be discrete and re hide well.
