From Interstate 79 to Erie: follow I79 until it ends, this will place on the Bayfront Highway (Connector). Follow the Bayfront Highway until you come to Shannon Rd. (about 4 miles, there is a light at this intersection) TURN LEFT onto Shannon Rd. (first stop light) you will come to Cooper Rd. There is an Ice Cream stand on the right-hand side. TURN RIGHT on Cooper rd. Follow road and short distance and you will cross a bridge. On the other side of the bridge there is a small parking area on the right. Park here. There will be a small blue sign "Welcome to Penn State Erie. You will see the trailhead in front of the parking area.

CLUES:
Follow the trail until the creek crosses the path (there is culvert that the creek passes thru under the trail) There is also another blue sign “Welcome to Penn State Erie” STOP. On the left side of the trail before you reach the creek were it crosses the trail you will see a very large rock that has been carved into. This rock marks a small path that goes off to the left. Take this path approximately 10/12 feet and the trail will split. Follow the trail to the left. Take approximately 50 steps, you will see on your left, 4 large trees and 1 small tree. You will find what you seek in the base of the tree that is to the left of the small tree. Please be sure to place bark and branches back to cover the letterbox. If the weather is good, take your bathing suit and enjoy the creek.

About Wintergreen Gorge: Wintergreen Gorge was formed 11,000 years ago by Fourmile Creek eroding the glacial debris left behind from the last ice age when the glaciers retreated 20,000 years ago. The glaciers left behind layers of sandstone and shale, which were more easily eroded by water than the underlying bedrock in the region.
