This letterbox commemorates the Tugboat that sat in Buzzards Bay at the base of the Bourne Bridge for 25 years. It was perhaps the most famous of all the Cape Cod tugs. No. 16 never actually worked a day in the Cape Cod Canal. She was one of the last surviving New York Central Railroad's steam tugboats. These tugs worked three shifts a day from 1924-1968 in New York Harbor. Most of them were eventually scrapped, but this one was saved and restored by Arthur Fournier of Penobscot Bay, Maine. In 1982, New York Central No. 16 Tugboat was transferred to Buzzards Bay, MA where it resided on land for 25 years as a landmark for Shaw's Fish Market & Grandma's Pie Shop, at the base of the Bourne Bridge (off Cape side) to welcome people to Cape Cod.

On July 27, 2006 the Tugboat was removed by the current landowners, CVS. Last we heard, just the steam stack and wheelhouse were salvaged, and may be at the North River Tugboat Museum in Kingston, NY

Driving Directions :

Due to the busy area that the Tugboat had resided, we decided to place the box on the other side of the canal (on Cape side).
Easier if you're getting on or off the cape.

---- Drive around the rotary (on Cape side) at the Bourne Bridge: take your 1st exit onto Trowbridge Road, drive for 2/3 mile to the 5 corners intersection (County Road). Drive straight through onto Shore Road heading towards Gray Gables & Monument Beach. After about 1/3 mile take a right under the small train underpass onto Old Monument Neck Road, and then a another right on to Aptucxet Road. Aptucxet Trading Post & a windmill are on your left, you should be able to park somewhere around the windmill.

Walking towards the Trading Post & the canal you will find a walking path on your left. The Trail has maps at the beginning and end of the path so you shouldn't get too lost. There's a main path & a loop trail through these woods so you shouldn't need a map. Follow the path (1/4 mile) till you get to the canal & bike path. You should pass the entrance and exit to the loop trail on the left but you should ignore them for now.

After checking out a view of the canal, pole #365 and maybe even a tug, you should head back up the trail. From the bike trail count off 40 steps up the trail into the woods. On your left will be a larger dying/dead tree with many branches. One of the far branches is leaning high up against a dead cedar-type tree. The box is hidden at the base of this smaller tree on the side closest to the trail & canal, under a piece of slate.

----- After finding the box you can take the path to get back to the Trading Post & car. Stay to the left and watch for the signs. You can also continue biking down the bike path looking for more of the many letterboxes hidden in this area.
