I have always been fascinated by old cemeteries. Part of it is the wonderful history to be found there. Part of it probably comes from having had a father who was one of the last stone cutters in this area who would hand-letter grave stones. Many a time my dad would take us to a cemetery to see his latest piece of handiwork. I love the art of the old stones, and the wonderful sentiments often found on them. I hope to make this an ever growing series. Each stamp is taken from the artwork of a gravestone in the clues. Maybe this is my way of following in my father's footsteps! Thomas Vining's book "Cemeteries of Cranberry Isles and the Towns of Mount Desert Island" would be a useful resource for these boxes, but they can be found by using the clues provided, a good map and some sleuthing. These towns cover wide geographic areas, so don't let the location limit your search. Please be respectful of these sacred sites when you visit. If you see trash left by others, please pick it up. None of my boxes require digging, tramping off trails or other destructive actions. A couple of these are hidden under leaves, sticks, bark and stones. When you see the spot, I think it will be obvious. If you have difficulty, please email me for additional hints.

Forgotten Souls Box #1 - Jennie & Thankful ~ gone missing
(Town of Bar Harbor)
Status update ~ As of December 19, 2004 this box had been pulled for the winter. When I checked on this box there was on obvious path to it. If you notice this, please do as I did and take one of the old sticks lying about and swish the dead leaves around to disguise the path. Also, please do not use the tiny footstone that is nearby as cover for the box. Leave the footstone in its spot against the tree. Please just re-hide with old sticks, bark and leaves. Thanks!

On an Old County Road, in a shady glen
Lie forgotten memories of women and men
Who long ago, this island called home
But now, long asleep, no longer roam
Some stones lie in ruin, some on the ground
If you search very carefully Jennie will be found
From there, not too far, Thankful’s grave you will spy
The treasure you seek will be found quite nearby.

Forgotten Souls Box #2 - The Heath Brothers ~ gone missing
(Town of Mount Desert)
As of September 12, 2004 this box has gone missing. I will aim to create a replacement and will probably place it in a different location.

Up an Oaken Hill, to a shady spot
You will find a quiet, burial plot
Souls rest peacefully here ‘neath the trees
Kept company by birds and the hum of the bees
Two stones side by side point to heaven on high
But barely are noticed by those driving by.
Two brothers went off to the Civil War
Knowing full well what might be in store
Now under the mossy ground they rest
Shining examples of Maine’s very best
Stand ‘tween the footstones and look to the side
At the base of a spruce tree the letterbox hides
Covered in leaves, with a stone or two
Forgotten Souls #2 waits for you

Forgotten Souls #3 - Young Daniel Robinson ~ gone missing
(Town of Southwest Harbor)
This box is being pulled for the winter on New Year's Day, 2005

On a High Road not too far from the sea
Forgotten Souls #3 waits for thee
A mother’s dear son, only fourteen
Taken too soon, now rests ‘neath the green
Of the Old Burying Ground with a poem o’er his head
All who have visited, these words have read:
“Dear parents dry that starting tear and hush that troubled sigh
Your son though no longer here, is safe beyond the sky”
Gaze beyond young Daniel’s stone
Near the end of the wall is the letterbox’s home
Two pieces of mortar conceal your quest
Remember the souls who lie here in rest
(There are inquisitive children living on either side of this burial ground, so please be especially discrete)

Forgotten Souls #4 - William Heckman
(Town of Bar Harbor. Though not old, I found this marker fascinating. There are plenty of markers in this cemetery that are very old.)

Though many a Hadley on the hillside rests
To Point another way will work the best
"I am not here", the marker shares
"Search your heart, I am there."
A fallen family lies ahead
Their hopes and dreams are now long dead.
The box you seek, safe hidden lies
Birch 'neath a spruce is sheltered nearby.
