THIS LETTERBOX IS MISSING

This letterbox is located on Pigot’s Trail in Mount Stewart.

Pigot’s Trail is part of the Mount Stewart Wildlife Management Area and is near the Hillsborough River Eco-Center (104 Main Street, Rte 22 off Rte 2). The Eco-Center has a brochure for Pigot’s Trail.

You can park at the Eco-Center. An entrance to the trail is across the street to the right.

This summer PEI hosted the Canada Games. Young athletes compete in a variety of sports (tennis, volleyball, basketball, rowing, soccer, baseball, etc) for their province. This hand carved stamp is the logo for this year’s games.

---------------------

Follow the trail past the houses and over the bridge spanning the Hillsborough River. While over the river you may notice the changing tides, blue herons, or fishers.

Over the bridge you will approach houses. A sign indicates the trail goes to the left and that is marked with brown-topped posts.

Continue following the trail and go past the Birding Area/Waste Water Treatment Area. There was a field of Queen Anne’s Lace and Golden rod on the left when setting the letterbox in August.

The trail turns parallel to the river (a left, then right turn). You’ll notice a row of birdhouses scattered through another field. The trail continues along and you’ll go to the spot almost at the opposite side of the birdhouse line.

Take a left at a brown topped post (on left) near a Wildlife Management Area sign (on right). There will be concrete posts about 100 feet down this section of the trail.

Continue to the end of this straightaway (it was a little overgrown in late August). You’ll be able to see lots of wildlife as water will be on both sides.

Before the trail turns right, you’ll come across a brown topped post and a bench. Left of the bench, there is a cluster of trees. Take five paces left from the left end of the bench toward the first birch. Turn right and take four paces to the small pine. The Canada Games letterbox is behind and underneath the pine.

You can either retrace your steps to get back or continue along the trail which will loop back. Also, depending on the day, the trail can be very buggy.
