Box 1 Salmon River State Forest

The first purchase of lands, which comprise the Salmon River Forest, was made by the State Board of Fisheries and Game in 1934. The Forest now contains 6000 acres located in the towns of Hebron, Marlboro, Colchester, East Haddam and East Hampton. Included in the forest area is 1300 acres that are leased from the United States Government. The important tributaries of the Salmon River are the Dickenson Stream, Blackledge River, Jeremy River and Fawn Brook, all of which enter the main river above the Comstock Covered Bridge. The Salmon River joins the Connecticut River a short distance from East Haddam. It is probably the largest stream and watershed whose sources and mouth are entirely within the limits of the State. AFTER you find the letterbox, you may want to travel 7 more miles on Route 16, from this box to the recreation park with picnic tables on the left and visit the Comstock Covered Bridge on the right.

Directions: From Colchester center, at the intersection of Routes 85 and 16, take Route 16 toward Middletown. Continue about 4 miles, and across from Babcock Pond on the left turn RIGHT onto Cemetery Road. Turn right into the road which loops around the cemetery and returns to Cemetery Road.

Clues: Toward the left side of the cemetery, from the looped road, then to the right of Adam’s Cube and the railings -- is a tipped-over stone with no visible name on top but the name Jane E. facing the ground. It is also next to the stone of Kellog. Under the stone is what you are seeking. Please try to cover well. Thank you for visiting.
P.S. Bring ’Our Smallest Friends’ as they are close by.
