Visitors who come to Texas expecting to see only oil wells and cactus are amazed by the flourishing beauty of East Texas. What seems even more surprising to the Old West ideal are the famous Tyler Roses. Approximately one-fifth of all commercial rose bushes produced in the United States are grown in Smith County, while over one-half of the nation's rose bushes are packaged and shipped from this area.
This burgeoning industry, which began at the turn of the century, has established Tyler as the "Rose Capital of the Nation." It is only fitting that the "City of Roses" is home to the nation's largest Municipal Rose Garden. From late April until frost, the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden blooms with nearly 40,000 rose bushes exhibiting approximately 500 varieties of roses. Over 100,000 people from around the world visit the Rose Garden annually. When you come to Tyler, you definitely need to stop and smell the roses.

Directions: This letterbox is located at the Tyler Rose Garden Center in Tyler, Texas. It’s located at 400 Rose Park Drive at W. Front Street (Hwy. 31). Go to the back of the museum building and down the stairs to the right.

To the Box: Go to the Idea Garden located at the back right corner of the gardens (Southeast corner). Enter the first gate and go to the two benches at the back left corner. There, you’ll see a very large pine tree very close to the end of the bench. Go around the tree to the chain-link fence and to the right to the first fence post. Close to the top of the post, you’ll see a camouflaged tube connected to a wire with a carabiner. Study this arrangement before doing anything. Pull the tube through the fence before opening the clip so it doesn’t fall on the other side of the fence. When you replace it, clip it to the wire first, (so it doesn’t fall through), then slide the tube through the fence so it can’t be easily seen. Tyler Rose 2 is very close to this box.
