Dec. 2010 - Unfortunately, Flopsy, Mopsy and the Prize seem to have gone missing. I believe the others are still there tho'.

This series is in the Breezy Hill Farm section of the Canton Land Trust. A basic trail map and description can be found at the following link. It may prove useful.

We have taken some poetic license with our story but it’s still a nice hike. It might take an hour depending on which way you go and how long you take to stamp in, etc. Trail is not a difficult one but it has some muddy patches (even after a relatively dry stretch.) None of the boxes has ink, all have log books. Boxes were planted in early September so some of the clues might not be as obvious in other seasons.

Directions: From Rt 44 in Canton (not far from the New Hartford line), go north on Indian Hill Rd. At Breezy Hill Rd. go to the right (the paved way). The trailhead is about .1 miles up the hill. There is a pull off big enough for a few cars on the left just before the trailhead.

Clues:
Box #1 – Look for the yellow trailhead and head in. Stop at the first tree which is a triple on the left. Look in the sand bank at the root of the triple tree. Here you will find Mrs. Rabbit. Mrs. Rabbit sent Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail down the lane to gather blackberries. You should go that way too. Flopsy stopped short of the field to rest in the wall.

Box #2 – At wall, go right 5 paces to just after the white rock with the black spots and look behind the flat rock. You don’t have to move this rock. Flopsy should be napping there.

Box #3 – Now go back to the trail and into the field. Follow the left edge of the field and go out the other side. The trail goes straight. (To the left you’ll see a no trespassing sign on a tree down the trail.) The trail only goes a short way in the woods before going into another field. Just before going into the field, Mopsy got tired and decided to rest too. Look for the big tree to the right with all the Vs. Just below 2 rocks there is a small log on the ground. At about the middle of the bottom side under pieces of bark, Mopsy found a spot to rest. Make sure you cover the area well and carefully.

Box #4 – Now in to the field. Stay to the left again but not all the way. The trail goes off to the left and into the woods again. Look for the yellow blaze. This will be a short section in the woods before going back into the field again. At the top of the field, it’s back into the woods. At the road Cottontail has had it. There being no blackberries anywhere, a nap sound like a good idea. The trail goes left but Cottontail went to the right a bit. See the white rock with black spots on the right? (This one’s bigger than the last one.) Go directly across the road and look behind the small rocks in the wall. This is Cottontail’s hidey hole.

Box #5 – So where did Peter go? He had headed to Mr. McGregor’s garden and in the process had lost his shoes and jacket. Mr. McGregor had spotted him and was in pursuit. Continue on the trail (the left one) a short way to a split. Stay right. You are now on a loop trail. You will eventually end up back at this point and have to retrace your steps to your car. As you continue down the trail, you will pass an orange blazed trail to the right. This heads into the Sun, Wind and Woodland Preserve. Peter would love to explore it but this would have to wait for another day when Mr. McGregor was not on his heels. Continue on yellow through the ferns. It sure seems like there are millions of them around here. You will come to a T. Going right will bring you around the full loop. Going left is a short cut if you don’t want to do the whole thing. You can go either way. Just across from where the short cut meets the other side of the loop there is a stump with rocks on top. This is where Peter decided to hide from Mr. McGregor.

Box #6 – Now continue on yellow. (This would be straight ahead if you took the full loop or to the left if you took the short cut.) You will pass a fallen birch on the right. At the next yellow blaze on the left look into the woods for the big fallen tree. The prize Peter had been looking for is in the base.

Now continue to the end of the loop and then back the way you came in. When you pass Mrs. Rabbit’s hold, tread quietly. All the little bunnies returned home, one a bit the worse for wear, and three of them were having their dinner. Peter was sound asleep on the soft sand floor.
