Located at the Long Pond Ironworks Historic District on Route #511 (Greenwood Lake Tnpk) in West Milford, NJ, just west of the Monksville Reservoir. About one mile roundtrip.

Park your car at the visitors center/museum. You can pick up a Self-Guided Tour pamphlet located in the boxes on the windowsill outside of the museum. Take a quick tour of the museum.

From the visitors center proceed northwest in front of the pink-shingled Stites House, then behind the brown Laird-West House. Follow the wood-chip path into the area with three houses.

Follow the trail in front of the Whritenour House, down the old road and into the past. Continue on the road, over the wooden bridge about 100 yards to the village crossroads.

From the crossroad, proceed to the right along the Furnace Road(turquoise-blazed Highlands Trail).

Proceed past the northern furnace ruins on the path alongside the river.

Proceed around the northern waterwheel to the trail that climbs the hill.

Go over the bridge toward gigantic waterwheel pit. (Waterwheel was never constructed). Walk past pit on your right, continue up grassy path bearing left up hill.

Look very carefully about 250 feet up the hill is a boulder with a foot long pipe sticking out of it. Directly across the path on the right of that boulder will be another huge rock cluster. Walk around to backside opening, on bottom left side will be what you seek...hidden in small rock pile at your feet.

Please be discreet while stamping in, as the trail continues on to Mine Hole and waterfalls. Please be sure to camouflage the box even better than you found it. Check your work before leaving.

Follow the dirt road back the way you came or check out another trail!!
