**RETIRED**

Back in the early 19th century, salmon fishing and railroading were the city of Newport's calling card. The city on the Lake grew up around 2 railroads and hundreds of cottages and camps belonging to generations of recreational fishermen. Lake Memphremagog extends about 40 miles between Newport and Magog, Quebec and is filled with many different kinds of fish including the much sought after salmon . Trains, boats and automobiles made Newport a vacation destination for families and serious angelers.

Begin your search by parking on the lower rear lot behind the police station near the City Dock Building. Check out the marina and grab yourself a snack before you head down the path between the tracks and the lake. Make your way past the gazebo and gaze into the glistening waters. The name Memphremagog is derived from Algonkian, in which it means "where there is a big expanse of water". Maybe you'll see one of those much sought after salmon that the Lake is noted for. Continue on until you come to the bridge. Head right to the lighthouse. This is the site of the original train station. Check out the sign describing the area and look at the picture of the men fishing and the old steam engine. Head back to the beginning of the bridge and look down for some concrete covering your catch. Close you eyes and envision the sunset. Listen and you might hear someone say " Hold my dinna, Mahtha, I'm goin' fishin"!! But keep your distance, you never know when some fishermen might reel in "Memphre" the lake Monster instead.
