Woodsy Walk
All OK as of 9/29/2011.
This is a lovely woodsy walk on a newly-discovered trail in Madison. It is perfect for families – no climbing, less than one mile, about one-half hour is needed.
Find the Madison Town Offices on Campus Drive, off of the Hammonasset Connector in Madison. Drive past the field on the way in, bear left, pass the town offices and police station, and park in the furthest lot back there, by the Arts Barn. Look for the green sign that says, “Madison Town Campus Trails.”
Go around the gate and notice red blazes. At the first fork bear left – pass one trail on your left. You will soon arrive at a river overlook/amphitheater area, where you will head left. Very quickly you come to the two-sister tree on your left, look behind it for a woodsy tree (replaced box 1/2013; actually IN tree now).
Continue to a picnic table on your right. Head toward it, and turn left, walking right along the edge of the water until the trail ends – go left, slightly up, and U-turn left. Soon cross a small bridge and keep going straight. Soon you will see a tree on your right with open roots. Look behind (middle area0 the downed trunk opposite it, on the left side of the trail (replaced 9/2011 in the new spot).
Continue straight until you reach the open area/major intersection (amphitheater area now to your left) where you should head to the right. Go left at the next intersection, along a tree-lined pathway. Pass a path which comes in from the left. Just after that, note a large multi-trunked tree on your right, set about 30 feet back. Look behind that for a woodsy stump. Return back down the tree-lined path, straight at the intersection and back to your car? Nice in there, isn’t it?
