Go to Nisene Marks State Park in Aptos, CA and park inside near the front kiosk. There is an $8 fee per vehicle. Start at the Split Stuff Trail next to the parking lot. This is a 1.5 mile hike with some steep hills.

Stay to your right until you see the post to turn left on the Old Growth Trail. The arrow will show the way. Follow the arrows (do not turn onto the Rancho Aptos Trail)

Go downstairs to the creek. You may want to explore around here but then continue across the creek using the bridge and go up the stairs. Stay to your right and continue on the Old Growth Loop.

Enjoy the detour to the twisted grove. It's worth it but come back to the Old Growth Trail to continue the hunt. Continue up on the Old Growth trail and keep to your left. Be on the look-out for the Jack-o-lantern tree. You are close. Continue straight ahead to an arrow post directing you to the Advocate Tree 250'. Go down the steep hill and check out the Advocate Tree. Imagine getting in the burn mark elevator and riding to the top to see what you can see.

Return on the same trail, up the hill from the Advocate Tree. On your way back to the Old Growth Loop sign post, stop 10 paces before the post. Look behind the large redwood just off the trail on your right. You will find what you seek at the base. Hide it well and continue the loop for another .3 miles back to where you started.
