This clue is part of the Urbana Park District’s Wild About Parks Quest--celebrating the Anita Purves Nature Center’s 30th anniversary. The Quest runs 6/13/09-6/12/10, but the boxes will remain in place indefinitely. Prizes can be won during the Quest for those who find 10, 20, and 30 boxes. Perkins/Judge Webber/Dog Park Clue
Difficulty: Moderate
Time: 20 minutes
Special Note – you will need a pencil and crayon to complete this clue
Just a quarter mile east from the intersection of Cunningham and Perkins Roads you can find one Urbana park that has gone to the dogs. Locate the park information kiosks to learn how to become a park member. The resident fee for a park membership is $38/year for one dog.
You are welcome to visit the owners and their canine friends if you are a member or pay the daily entrance fee. Please note that for their safety, children under age six are not permitted inside the fences area.
Following the outside of the fence, walk down the gravel drive to the gate. Go past the gate and start counting the fence posts until you reach the same number as you wrote above (hint the cost of resident membership). This should take you to the southern edge of the fence along a mowed grass path. Look down along the fence and find a rock with a leaf imprint. When this concrete piece was made a leaf left an imprint that you can now make a rubbing with your crayon in your clue booklet.
Turn so that the fence is behind you while standing in front of this special rock. Look for a group of Mulberry trees growing just inside the wooded edge. Mulberry trees grow with twisted trunks making a perfect place to find this park’s letterbox. Be sure to return this box exactly as you found it so it is hidden and ready for the next quester to find.
