Theodore Roosevelt became our nation’s twenty-sixth president after William McKinley was assassinated. Teddy, as he became known, believed his presidential position was that of “steward of the people”. His actions as president supported this belief.
Teddy, the youngest president of the time, was a strong advocate of conservationism and supported the formation of national forests in the west and reserved other lands for public use. A story is told how in 1902, President Roosevelt was out on a hunting trip in Mississippi with friends. After catching no animals the whole day, his friends trapped a bear so the President could shoot it. Being the good sportsman and lover of nature that he was, he ordered the bear to be released back into the woods.
Clifford Berryman, a newspaper cartoonist heard about the story and drew a cartoon illustrating the President with the bear. The cartoon appeared in the Washington Post and the people’s love for their president grew even stronger. Shop owners Rose and Morris Michtom, saw the cartoon and came up with the idea of making a stuffed toy bear for children to play with and hug while falling asleep. The Michtoms dressed one bear to look like the President and mailed it to the White House asking Roosevelt for permission to call the bear “Teddy”. The president gladly let his name be used and as they say, the rest is history!
The school mascot of Roosevelt Elementary is Ted E. Bear, named in honor of President Roosevelt. The symbol of the teddy bear is proudly displayed throughout the building, and on this stamp. Consider brushing the bear’s bow on the stamp red, and stamping the rest of the bear brown.
Also, PLEASE only search for this stamp during hours that the school is NOT in session. We do not want to risk school officials removing the stamp. School is in session from 7:40 – 2:50, Monday through Friday, from the Tuesday after Labor Day until mid-June. For days off and early dissmals, please check out the Kenosha Unified School District website at www.kusd.edu . This stamp’s location is visible to many people, and may cause a distraction during school hours, so please use great care when finding and stamping.
Start by locating Roosevelt Elementary School in Kenosha, Wisconsin. What you seek is in the front yard.
These seven trees stand three by three by three, to block electricity. The one you seek, you must take a peek, is middle on the southeast. Take a look below, and there you go!
Please use great care with this Ted E. Bear stamp; it is fragile. Happy Letterboxing!
