Timpie Springs, oddly enough, can be found right near Timpie Point, which is the northernmost point of the Stansbury Mountain range. To get to Timpie Springs, head west on I-80 from Salt Lake City (or East from California or Nevada). Take the exit just west of the Stansbury Mountains (it should be exit #77). From the freeway, head south on Skull Valley Road.

Don't get too comfortable on Skull Valley Road, however. You'll be turning in about ΒΌ mile. Turn left on the first road you come to (the first road that's not barricaded, that is). Follow this road a short distance until it meets up with another road (the one that was barricaded back on the main road). Turn right onto this road (which is evidently called Mistway Road, though I never saw any signs).

Follow this road about 1/3 of a mile. You should see a pond on your left between Mistway Road and I-80. Could this be Timpie Springs? (Yes, it is)

Before you arrive at the intersection, take a look at the springs. Find the large rock on the southeast corner that sits above the water. It looks like a good place to stand to look for fish down below, or other things.

Don't worry, though, you don't have to swim in the water to find the letterbox. It's not even near the springs. You can just go ahead and turn your back on the springs. Go ahead. I'll wait.

Now that you're facing roughly east, away from the water, look up at the big rocks and pay attention, because this may get tricky.

From your perch above the water, and looking east toward the rocks, you should see a big rock. Okay, so you'll see a lot of big rocks. This one happens to be sitting on top of the hill, or it is the top of the hill. Just look at the rock on top of the hill. Follow the silhouette of the hill down to the left. You should see two rocks (big rocks) sticking up, creating a V between them. Down further to the left you should see tow smaller rocks (but still big rocks) also forming a V.

While keeping an eye on those 4 rocks, walk north on the dirt road. Keep walking until the V in the farther rocks lines up with the V in the nearer rocks. Walk toward the far set of rocks, passing through the V made by the smaller rocks. As you approach the two large rocks making a V, you should notice a cavity in the rock on the left (north rock). It's big enough for a grown man to hide in there if he curled up into a ball or something.

You can try fitting in there if you want, but the letterbox is to the left of the cavity in a much smaller cavity right near the ground. It's covered by a pretty conspicuous-looking rock.

Please be aware that the dirt road to Timpie Springs can be pretty rough. A 2-wheel drive car can make it just fine, but it's a pretty bumpy ride. The hike up to the letterbox is short, but it's somewhat steep and rocky. It's probably not accessible with snow on the ground, but when there's not snow on the ground there are bugs out. Bring some repellent or a really big fly swatter (or both). There could be snakes, so be careful walking around and reaching in to get the letterbox.

On the plus side, I've heard there can be really good fishing in the springs (you can see hundreds of fish swimming around in there) and if I were a dog I'd probably really like this area.
