This letterbox series is located at Ames Nowell State Park in Abington. In total there are 5 boxes hidden (each hidden with a family member’s favorite color stamp pad) with a book at the last box to stamp. This is a nice walk with a few different areas to have a picnic so if you have the time pack a picnic lunch/snack and enjoy the day. As with any letterbox, please rehide carefully as some of the boxes may be seen by passers-by if they are not hidden correctly and keep your eye out for poison ivy. Happy hiking!

You will start this series by pulling into the parking area to the right once you’ve entered Ames Nowell. Get out of your car and head over to the brown information building. You will take the paved path to the right that is lined on one side by a small stone wall.

You will soon come to a fork in the road. They both lead to the same spot so you can go down either path. At end of fork there will be a playground on your left and a brown sign post on your right with a path behind the post. Go down this path on your right.

You will see a pavilion area on the left. Stay straight on path. There will be a clearing in the path with one single tree in the center. Continue on path past the tree and pass a nice quiet picnic spot on the left. At edge of grassy picnic area continue down the path for approximately 50 paces. On the left there will be a tree growing alongside a rock. Underneath the rock is Letterbox #1. Please rehide carefully.

Continue on path for Letterbox #2.

You will pass a path on the left and then the right. Continue past a small clearing on the left. Shortly past the clearing there will be a stone wall on your left. Continue past wall and a line of rocks that will be on your left up ahead. Just ahead on the left there will be a group of boulders. You will know if you’re in the right spot if you see a carved tree. Go into the wooded area to the back. Between 2 boulders and underneath the biggest boulder is Letterbox #2. Please rehide carefully.

Go back to path and continue for Letterbox # 3.

On the left you will soon pass another rock wall. After passing the rock wall to your left, continue up ahead and look to the right for a tree with inspiration (Hint: You are looking for a tree with a +). Stop at the tree. With your back to the tree take 3 giant steps or 13 tip-toes to the twin tree directly across from tree. Between these trees hidden under some bark, twigs and rocks is Letterbox # 3. Please rehide carefully.

Continue for Letterbox #4.

Another rock wall will be on your right up ahead. Going down a slight rocky hill, you will soon see another rock wall on your left and right. Standing in the middle of the path between the two walls, take approximately 20 steps diagonally left into the wooded area. To your right there will be a rock with a rotten tree trunk nearby. Hidden under the rock is Letterbox # 4. Please rehide carefully.

Go back to path and continue down rocky path for Letterbox # 5.

Keep your eyes open for a family of 5 on the left. Hidden here is Letterbox # 5. If you continue past family of 5, in approximately 14 giant steps you will see a rock wall on your left. This is a sign you’ve gone too far. Turn around and look for the family of 5. Please rehide carefully.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO TAKE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE TO OUR “IN SEARCH OF THE BIG BASS” LETTERBOX CONTINUE…

One of our family’s newest hobbies is fishing. Daddy and daughter will spend hours upon hours fishing. If you were to ask them why they spend so much time out there, they would say they’re waiting to catch the big bass so in honor of Daddy/daughter time we have created “In Search of the Big Bass” Letterbox.

Once you have found all 5 of the boxes in our series, continue on path. In approximately 14 giant steps from Letterbox # 5 you will see a rock wall on your right. Continue on path passing another rock wall on your right. After you have passed the wall, there will be a clearing in path. Walk toward the water and on the left in a small ditch there will be a line of 5 rocks. On the left past this area is a narrow path that continues along the water’s edge. Go down this narrow path. Stay right along narrow rooty path over wooden bridges. If you are quiet you can see and possibly catch some frogs under and around the bridge. Continuing through a rock wall and over another wooden bridge you will go up a slight hill. A valley will be on your right.

You’re almost there….

You will see water on your right. Shortly after the valley and in view of the water you will see a grouping of small trees on your left. In a few steps up ahead on your right there will be a small path leading to the water. Go down this little path leading to the water’s edge. This is one of our favorite fishing spots where we have caught our big bass. Depending on the day/time, you may see Daddy/daughter on one of their fishing excursions. Just before you reach the water’s edge on your left you will see the last rock in line of the rock wall. Standing on this rock and counting it as your 1st, walk until you get to your 8th rock. You will be standing between 2 trees. Standing on 8th rock, count 6 more rocks in the line of the wall. The 5th rock is covered in moss. Underneath 6th rock is “In Search of the Big Bass” Letterbox. Please rehide carefully placing 3 rocks, logs and leaves in front of hole so letterbox is not visible. Thank you!

TO GET BACK TO YOUR CAR YOU CAN EITHER GO BACK THE WAY YOU CAME OR FOLLOW DIRECTIONS BELOW….

To get back to your car, you will go back up to the path and continue down path with rock wall and water to your right. Path is narrow and gets a little rocky/rooty but not too difficult.

Keeping the rock wall and water to your right, you will soon come to a group of trees. Go through trees into a very rocky rooty path (My 4 year old calls this “The Tree Trail”). If you’d like there is a nice rock on your right to take a break.

You will go over a wooden bridge and stay right down a slight hill, staying along water’s edge and continuing up a slight hill keeping water’s edge to your right. You will come to a HUGE boulder (another good resting or fishing spot). Passing this boulder you will go through an opening to a rock wall and soon there will be another big boulder. On the left you will be able to see the pavilion area in the distance. Go over 3 more wooden bridges. You will come to a rooty area with a bench. You can sit and take a break or you can continue. You are almost there…

Continue to your right going over stone wall into a picnic area. Playground will be on your left. Continue along water’s edge until you get to the clearing with the dock and water on your right. Go left up stone path leading to a paved path which brings you to the parking area.

Hope you enjoyed your day hiking through the trails of Ames Nowell!
